Chapter #01 - The Chosen One

"Oh man, where is she?" I groaned, waiting for my mom to pick me up from school. "It's already been about 20 minutes..."

I waited a while longer, watching everyone else getting picked up. Eventually, my mom arrived.

"Sorry I'm a little late, Tal..." My mom told me apologetically.

"A little?! I've been waiting for almost a half-hour!"

"I got distracted on the way here." She explained. "I'm really sorry."

It's the always the same thing...

"But I have a good reason this time. A lot of people are selling their old things at the park, and I thought we could get something for your father. His birthday is tomorrow, after all."

"Oh, that's right..." I can't believe I forgot...

Dad... It's been almost three years since he died. He was a firefighter, a really famous one actually. He was even considered a hero in my town. I thought he was the coolest, and was really happy that he was my dad. So one day, I asked him to take me to see him on the job. He was hesistant at first, but since my 10th birthday was coming up soon, he brought me with him.

... And that's when it happened. I did something really stupid, and my dad died because of it. He's gone, and it all my fault. Mom knows this, but always tells me it's not true.

Dad never even liked his job all that much. My parents married without their families' permission, so we never had much money. We only have money now because of my dad's insurance. My mom still doesn't like to spend much money though, in case something happened to her.

Which is probably why we're going to this park in the first place...

"We're here, Tal!" Mom exclaimed, after parking the car.

"Oh, okay..." I responded faintly, still thinking about dad.

"You can get something for yourself too, if you want. I'll get something for your father, okay?"

"Sure..." I told her, then went to the sale in a different direction from my mom.

Big deal, I doubt there's anything I'll want here anyway...
