Ch.#01 - Rise, the Aloof Loner

Rise

It's my first day of high school... I thought to myself.

"Hey, Rise."

High school, one of the pinnacles of a teen's life. Parties, dances, school events, prom... is all in high school.

But I could really care less about any of those things.

It's not that I hate them persay; in fact I probably wouldn't mind them if I had someone to spend them with.

"It's been a while."

All the girls here are the same: moody, annoying, and they always want things from you. I'll never understand why so many guys want girlfriends for.

"Are you even listening to me? Hello!"

Man, I hate girls... Isn't there any decent one out there?

"RISE!!!"

"What do you want, Nina!?"

"Why are you ignoring me?! I just wanted to know how your summer was!"

"Two months without seeing you? It was fantastic."

"And what's that supposed to mean?!"

"It means you annoy me."

"Hmph... whatever. Anyway, my summer was really great! Let me tell you...

Here we go...

"First of all, I got a lot of shopping done, an-..."

"Yeah, yeah... I don't care. Go talk with your girl friends and leave me alone."

"Fine, be that way! Meanie!" She pouted and stormed off. Just like she always does...

Nina Floret. I've known her since 1st grade, but she's just as annoying as back then. Yet over the course of junior high, she became really popular with the guys for some reason.

"Whoa, are you really friends with that girl?! No way!" said some random, unfamiliar voice behind me.

"Who the heck are you?"

"W-wait, you're..." The guy started shaking. "R-Rise Lisaye."

"Yeah, so?"

"S-should I? Should I do this...?"

"... What's wrong with you?"

"Yes, I will! It's worth the risk!" He shouted randomly.

This guy has problems...

Before I could walk away from the weirdo, he grabbed my shoulder.

"W-wait a second! Let me become your comrade!"

"Er, what for...?" I really don't need any more odd 'friends', thanks...

"P-please introduce me to that girl you were talking to earlier! I'm begging you!"

"Huh? Why?"

"She's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. I fell in love at first sight!"

Oh great, not another one...

"Will you? Please?"

"Nope."

"Why not?" He started to sob.

"Because I don't want to. Now leave me alone."

"She's your girlfriend, isn't she? I'm sorry, I won't interfere then..."

"She's not my girlfriend."

"Then will you introduce me to her?"

"I already said no, dang it!"

"Why not?!"

"I'm not going through this again! Go away!"

"Not until you introduce me!"

"..." I had no choice but to flee. Which I did.


"I think I finally lost him..." I said panting, finding myself in a random hallway. "Where the heck am I, anyway?"

"Oh, what great timing! Been looking for ya, Rise."

"Jovan? What are you doing here?"

Jovan Bay. He's been my best friend for as long as I can remember. He can be a bit odd sometimes, and we don't agree on most things, but we still manage to stay friends in the end.

"This room here..." Jovan pointed to a door in front of us that I didn't notice before. "...isn't being used anymore."

"Okay? So what?"

"We're going to make this room our clubroom!"

"Clubroom? I thought this school had no clubs."

"Then this will be the first one."

"I doubt the teachers will let you use that room, Jovan."

"They won't mind. Like I said, no one's using it."

"They're probably going to use it for something eventually."

"That's why we have to make this club now!"

"Why do want to make a club so bad, anyway?!"

"Have you truly forgotten...?" His voice changed to a more serious tone. "Rise. This club is the first step towards our dream!"

"Our dream?"

"Yes! Our dream of becoming the next Quad Squad!"

"Q-Quad Squad...?"

"It's been our dream since we were little kids! How could you forget?"

"Yeah, when we were little kids. I don't really care about that anymore."

To be honest, I never really did even back then...

Jovan gasped. "H-how can you say that?!" he said, grabbing the front of my shirt. "It's our destiny to make this club!"

"Listen, Jovan..." I pulled his arms away from me. "...even if I were to join this club of yours, we still need two more people, don't we?"

"Not to worry, I've already got someone who'll join."

"S-seriously...?" I asked in disbelief.

"So we need only one more."

"I'll join!" A voice said behind me.

That voice sounds awfully familia-... oh no.

I slowly turned my head around, and there he was.

"Y-you're that psychopath!"

"Oh, you want to join? Sure thing!" Jovan exclaimed happily.

"No, Jovan! That's a really bad idea!"

"I'm Jovan Bay, what's yours?" He said, completely ignoring me.

"Jarr Penico. I'm Rise's new comrade."

"Oh, really? Then I won't have to introduce him to you then."

"Yo!" Some other guy came out of nowhere and said.

"W-who the heck are you?!"

"Oh, that's just Repse. He's the person I mentioned earlier." Jovan explained.

"Happy to be of service!" Repse exclaimed, with a weird expression on his face.

Just great, another loon...?

"Alright then, now we have enough members to form the Quad Squad! ... Hey Rise, where are you going?"

"Somewhere where I can find some peace and quiet." I uttered, while walking away from the three stooges.


After roaming around for a bit, I had finally found somewhere without anyone to bother me.

"The library, huh?" I said, looking up the sign above the room that read, well, 'Library'. "Couldn't ask for a more perfect place."

I went inside, and immediately sat down in one of the chairs.

"I guess I'll just chill out here until class starts..."

I closed my eyes, enjoying the beautiful silence. Which, wouldn't you know it, was interrupted by noise.

"Man, what now?!"

It sounded like someone scrambling through books.

"Is someone there?" I asked.

I got no response, so I decided to check through the walls of bookshelves to find the mystery noisemaker. I wouldn't let them get away with breaking my moment of solace!

"Ah!" Said a voice behind me, at the same time as I felt someone touch my back.

That voice happened to had come from a girl who crashed into me and fell to the ground, dropping all the books she was carrying.

"Um, you alright?" I asked the girl, feeling a bit sorry for her.

"M-my glasses..." She responded with a quiet voice.

"Oh, um..." I searched around for them, and handed them to her. "Sorry. Here you go."

"T-thank you..." It was at that time when she finally looked up and showed me her face.

The face... of the cutest girl I had ever seen in my life.
