Chapter 1 - Sei

Sei
"Long ago, when this world was first created, there were many evil beings plaguing the land. To remedy this, the Creator created four guardians: Guardian Sarjoun, Guardian Maira, Guardian Tansa, and Guardian Bollag. All four of them had an individual job in protecting the CS World. Three of them did their jobs right, but one became fed up with his job, and decided to use his power to rule the world instead. The evil Guardian gathered up so much power that the three other guardians had to combine their strength just to seal him away."
Our teacher had said that like she had repeated it hundreds of times. She probably had, actually.
"Now, who would like to continue the reading?" She asked the class.
As usual, no one responded.
The teacher sighed. "Alright then, I'll choose who will read myself. Let's see..."
Please don't pick me... Please don't pick me...!
"Hey teach, why not let Sei here read? He told me just now that he'd love to volunteer!"
"E-eh?!" I stammered.
The one who said that just now was Kuda, who sits next to me in class. He's really popular and gets along with everyone, but he always bullies me for some reason.
"Well, if you're so willing, then go ahead, Sei."
"B-but... I..."
"Hurry it up pal, everyone's waitin' on ya!" Kuda told me, snickering and smirking at me.
I gave in, hesitantly got up and picked up my book anxiously. "U-um..." I looked through the pages, trying to find what page we were on.
"Page 32, Sei." The teacher answered before I asked. "You should at least have your textbook prepared before you start reading."
"S-sorry..." I uttered nervously.
Almost everyone in my class started laughing, including Kuda, all the while my teacher was giving me an irritated glare.
I began reading. "B-because they had to u-use so much p-power, the t-three g-guardians..."
"Sei, I can't hear you." The teacher injected, still glaring at me. "And stop stammering all the time."
"I-I'm sorry..." I uttered again, almost tearing up.
"Excuse me, teacher!" A student cut in suddenly. "May I continue the reading?"
T-that's...!
Everyone turned to look at the person who had just said that, who was now standing up. Unlike everyone else in class, she had a very serious expression on her face.
"Hey, what's up, Sari baby? Can't you see Sei's havin' so much fun being the center of attention right now?" Kuda said to her. "Why do ya gotta ruin that for hi-..."
"Shut it, Kuda." She stated, remaining stern and unyielding.
"Hmph..." He gave up and turned back around.
She picked up her own textbook, ignoring all of the questionable leers she was receiving. She briefly sent a smile my way, and made a hand motion telling me to sit back down. I did as she said as she continued the reading.
"Because they had to use so much power, the three guardians can no longer roam freely in this world. Even to this day, they remain guarding the seal."
I have a hard time making friends. I have a hard time talking to others, especially in front of a lot of people at once. Because of this, no one likes me, even the teachers... But there's one exception. And that's Sari.
She's always serious and composed, and doesn't let anyone deter her from anything she does, no matter what. But she's also very kind; she actually takes the time to talk to me, unlike everyone else, and she always sticks up for me when I get bullied.
I think Sari's the coolest person ever, and I admire her a lot. I also have a really big crush on her...
"... and that is the legend of the Spiritual Guardians." Sari said, finishing the reading.
"Excellent job; thank you Sari." The teacher said to her. "You may take a seat now."
Sari closed her textbook and sat back down.
"We will have a 20 minute break for lunch, then continue with the lesson. You may roam around as much as you like, as long as you all don't cause a ruckus and are back in time for class. Understood?"
"Yes, ma'am..." The whole class said in unison.
The teacher left the room, and immediately afterward a bunch of guys gathered around Kuda's desk.
"Jeez, what's with this class anyways?" One of the guys sneered. "Why we gotta learn about this 'spiritual' stuff?"
"Yeah, I'm sure it's just a load of baloney, anyways." Kuda added, resting his feet on his desk. "I'm sure the old-timers just made it up 'cause they got nothin' better to do."
"I know, right? Like some beings with magical powers actually exist! You don't see 'em flyin' around or anythin', right?"
"Jeez, don't you guys even pay attention in class?!" Sari interrupted, having walked to the desk Kuda was sitting at. "They're busy guarding the seal, that's why you don't see them 'flying around', idiots!"
"Hey, don't be like that, babe. We get it." Kuda said slyly. "You don't need to give us attitude. Or is that your way of sayin' you're too shy to hang with me?"
He tried to extend his hand out to her hip, but she swatted it away angrily.
"Don't touch me!" She exclaimed, then walked away from their table, Kuda and the others still smirking at her.
Sari's so brave... I wish I could stand up to Kuda like that...
"Hey, Sei." Sari said to me, now standing in front of my desk.
"S-Sari!" I stammered, surprised to see her in front of me suddenly. "U-uh... G-good morning..."
"Morning?" She said in confusion. "But it's already noon..."
"Ah!" D'oh, what am I doing?! I'm so stupid... I hid my face in embarrassment. I wish I could disappear right now...
She lightly giggled. "Don't worry about it, Sei. It's okay." She gave me a warm smile.
"T-thanks, Sari... And f-for before, too..." I said softly, no longer hiding my head but my face remaining red.
"Don't mention it. I won't stand for any bullying in this school, especially when it happens to one of my friends."
"F-friends!?" I squeaked in surprise. "Y-you mean... me?"
"Yeah, you! Or do you not want to be my friend...?"
"O-of course...!" I uttered happily. "It w-would be an h-honor!"
"An 'honor'? Heheh, that's a bit much; it's not like I'm some amazing person or anything..."
Yes, you are! You're the most amazing person I know! A-at least to me...
