Steady Break
Markus awakens, in a bit of a daze. As he's used to getting up bright and early for his morning patrols, the sounds from outside are enough for him to realize he woke up later than usual.
Markus: "Ooogh..." He groans, holding his hand to his forehead as he slowly sits up. "W-wha...?"
Still not having fully awoken, his mind tries to make sense of why he's still in bed, and drenched in sweat. He notices a warm, moist cloth had been covering his forehead, which falls into his hand as he holds it up to look at it.
"Oh, you're awake, Sir Markus. How are you feeling?"
He glances to his side, and sees someone beside his bed, standing with a straight, professional posture. Markus rubs his eyes, and is surprised to see who it is.
Clad in a mix of an attire fit for both a maid and a knight-in-training, she looks at him with a light, kind smile.
Markus: "N-Noelle?! What are you doing here?"
Noelle: "Pardon the intrusion. Miss Lisa was actually the one watching over you until a few hours ago. She had some duties to attend to at the library, so she asked me to look after you in her stead."
Markus: "A few hours ago?! How long have you been here? And why am I even...?" More awake, he begins to recall the reason he'd been resting in bed for so long. "Oh, right! I got sick because of work fatigue... And on a day I had such an important mission! T-this is so embarrassing..."
As he tries to get out of bed, he reels a bit, Noelle quickly leaning over to keep him steady before he falls over.
Markus: "T-thank you..."
Noelle: "Think nothing of it! Here, let me prepare a fresh cloth for your forehead..."
She takes another cloth and soaks it in a small basin of cold water she's already prepared, before pressing it to his head.
Markus: "T-that feels pretty nice..."
Noelle: "By the way, Klee and Sir Albedo both left messages for you. Would you like me to read them for you now?"
Markus: "Albedo and Klee were here?"
Noelle: "Yes. Miss Lisa told me they'd heard you were sick from your sister, and came to check on you. You were fast asleep during their entire visit, however."
Markus: "I see... Speaking of Barb, I wonder where she even is right now..."
Noelle: "Um, pardon me, regarding the messages..."
Markus: "O-oh, sorry! You can go ahead and read them."
Noelle takes out a note from the nearby sidetable, and begins reading.
Noelle: "'Markus! Klee hopes you feel better soon. Here, I picked this apple for you! From, Klee.'" She smiles after reading Klee's message, handing him the apple.
Markus: "Thank you, Klee." With a small laugh, he takes a bite of the apple, it feeling very refreshing for his still raspy throat.
Noelle: "Here's Sir Albedo's message: 'You look surprisingly adorable and peaceful while you sleep. Anyway, take care, my friend.'"
Markus: "U-uh... I could've done without you reading me that one, but thank you anyway..." He grumbles, as he finishes eating the apple.
Noelle: "Here, drink this glass of water as well. You need to stay hydrated when you're ill, especially after sweating so much."
Markus: "Oh, thanks..."
He gratefully takes the cool glass, it feeling even more refreshing as he gulps down the chilly water.
Noelle: "Also, allow me to wipe the sweat from your back. Would you mind removing your shirt?"
Markus: "U-uh...!" He pauses, blushing at the thought.
Noelle: "Oh, apologies. Would you prefer I fetch someone else to do it instead, like Captain Kaeya?"
Markus: "Ugh." He shudders, not wanting to even imagine that. "N-no, I'd... rather not trouble anymore people than I already have... You can do it, I guess. J-just give me a second to..."
He reluctantly takes his shirt off, facing away from her as his ears burn in embarrassment. His shame is quickly replaced with a huge sigh of relief as she wipes off his warm sweat with another cool cloth.
Markus: "A-aah... Thank you, Noelle. I feel kind of... shameful to rely on you so much like this, though..."
Noelle: "As a maid of the Knights of Favonius, it's a honor to assist a senior member of the Knights, even in a manner like this, Sir Markus."
Markus: "I'm not sure I'd be considered a 'senior member' when I'm just an Outrider... And I'm sorry, but it's weird for you to call me 'Sir' Markus, when we're the same age..."
Noelle: "Hm... Understood. I'll keep that in mind in the future."
As Noelle continues, Markus thinks to himself,
Markus: "Noelle isn't someone I talk to very much, especially one-on-one like this. This is... really awkward, especially given the situation. I've had Barb take care of me in a similar manner when I've gotten sick before, but... Lisa, Sister Victoria, or even Rosaria would be preferable over..."
He nervously peers back at Noelle, who diligently finishes wiping his back.
Markus: "Why was she picked to look after me, anyway...?"
Noelle: "There, that should be good. Would you like my help with anything else, Sir... er, Markus?"
Markus: "N-no, you've done more than enough, thank you! Would you mind stepping out while I finish freshening up and change into some cleaner clothes?"
Noelle: "Certainly. I'll be waiting just outside your room."
She sets the cloth down before she walks out, in a poised and proper manner.
--
Markus eventually exits his room, in a fresh set of casual attire. Noelle looks concerned by his irritable expression.
Noelle: "I-is something the matter, Markus?" She gasps. "O-oh dear, was it because I tidied up your room without asking? My apologies! It just didn't feel right to sit there and not keep busy while I was tasked with watching over you..."
Markus: His expression softens, shaking his head. "Oh, no, that's not it. I actually appreciate what you did; I haven't had time to clean myself because I've been so busy."
Noelle: "Oh, good! I'm happy that I was able to assist you in that way as well!"
Markus: "That being said... did you happen to see my uniform or bow while you were cleaning...?"
Noelle: "Hm... No, I didn't. Why, have they gone missing?"
Markus: "They sure have, and I've noticed that Barb and Rosaria are also 'missing'!" He crosses his arms in a huff. "They must've taken them!"
Noelle: "R-really? But why would they do such a thing...?"
Markus: "I can only think of one reason... they hid them somewhere to prevent me from going out and working!" He clenches his fist in annoyance. "Grr, those two!"
Noelle: "I'm sure they only had good intentions with their actions, Sir Markus. Because you..."
Markus: "Because of me being sick, I know." He sighs, cutting her off. "Yeah, I get it, but still... Also, sorry, but like I said, please don't call me 'Sir' Markus..."
Noelle: "Oh! I-I apologize..." She covers her mouth shamefully.
Markus: "Anyway... I'll be going now. Thank you for everything, Noelle..."
As he begins walking toward the doors to exit the cathedral...
Noelle: "W-wait!" She hollers, a tad louder than intended.
Markus: "H-huh?" He turns to face her again, startled a bit.
Noelle: "I-I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but..." She pauses, fidgeting. "I was asked to... look after you while you were ill, so..."
Markus: "And... you did. Once again, thank you for that..."
Noelle: "No, I mean... I was told to not allow you to overexert yourself once you had awoken..."
Markus: He groans, despite himself, before asking, "Who told you that? Was it Lisa?"
Noelle: "Actually, it was... Master Jean."
Markus's face pales at her response, burying his face in his hands.
Markus: "Ooogh... I wish I hadn't asked... This is sooo embarrassing..."
Noelle: "I-I'm sorry..."
Markus: He exhales deeply, shaking his head. "No, it's fine. You don't need to keep apologizing to me. It's my fault, for worrying even Sis about me and my current condition..."
Noelle: "She's your older sister, Markus. Of course she'd be worried about you, right?" She tilts her head, confused by his last statement.
Markus: "No, that's... never mind. Anyway, I'm... fine. So..."
Noelle: "Are you sure? Let me feel your forehead just in case..."
She steps closer to place a hand to his head, but he backs away quickly before she can do so.
Markus: "O-okay, okay, I promise I won't go off to try and work!" He stammers, blushing. "B-but..."
Noelle: "If you're still feeling unwell, you should stay here and keep resting. If you have any errands to run, leave them to me."
Markus: "O-oh no, I just... wanted to go see Lisa. To, y'know, thank her for looking after me before..."
Noelle: "Ah, I see! In that case, I'll accompany you to the library, then."
Markus: "That's not necessary...!"
Before he can stop her, she already holding the cathedral doors open, before turning back to wait for Markus with a patient smile.
Markus: He sighs in defeat. "Never mind..."
--
Markus and Noelle find Lisa alone in the Favonius Headquarters' library, its usual visitors seemingly off to do other things during this beautiful day. They find her organizing one of the bookshelves before she notices the two of them.
Lisa: "Oh, hello, sweetie. How are you feeling?" She asks Markus with a warm smile. "And hello to you too, Noelle."
Noelle: "Greetings, Miss Lisa. I don't believe Markus is feeling completely better yet, but he wanted to come see you to thank you for looking after him earlier."
Lisa: "I see. How kind of you to drop by just for that. Thank you, sweetie."
Markus: "D-don't mention it, but..." His face turns slightly red before he continues. "Lisa, why do you always have to call me 'sweetie'?"
Lisa: She chuckles. "You're the adorable younger brother of my dear friend Jean, what else would suit you more than sweetie?"
Markus: "I don't know, my actual name...?" He utters... in his own head. He "responds" instead by simply grumbling.
Lisa: "In any case, while I do appreciate the visit, you should return home and get some more rest if you're still not feeling well."
Markus: "U-uh...!" He hesitates, before blurting out, "Actually, there's something... else I wanted to talk to you about, Lisa."
Lisa: "Oh?" Her eyes widen in intrigue. "A talk with you, sweetie? How rare."
Markus: "Y-yes, and... it might take a while. So... Noelle, you can go now. You don't need to look after me anymore."
Noelle: "Oh? Is that so? Very well then, I..."
Lisa: "Now, wait just a second." She cuts in, with a sharper tone. "Sweetie, while I adore you dearly, I won't let even you get away with lying to someone as earnest as Noelle."
Markus: "U-u-um...!" He gulps nervously.
Noelle: "Hm?" She raises an eyebrow in confusion.
Lisa: "... Understand?"
Markus: He sighs in defeat again. "... Yeah... I'm sorry..."
Lisa: "Let me guess, you want to sneak off and work, even when you're sick?"
Markus: "Well... of course I do. I don't want to lay around uselessly all day!"
Lisa: "I heard you became ill from overworking yourself..." She exhales, shaking her head. "Honestly, you're just like your sister..."
She retrieves a sheet of paper and hands it to Markus.
Lisa: "I figured this would happen, so... Would you like to run an errand for me?"
Markus: "Errand?" He inquires, looking at the paper she handed him.
Lisa: "There are a few... irresponsible folks in our city that are long overdue in returning the books they borrowed. Would you mind taking a walk around to ask for them back, please?"
Noelle: "Oh, I see! This is a good way for him to keep busy without overexerting himself! What a brilliant plan, Miss Lisa!"
Lisa: "Of course! Well, sweetie?"
Markus: "Mmngh..."
Lisa: "Don't 'mmngh' me. It's either this, or you head straight back to bed."
Markus: He glances away. "You don't need to treat me like a child..."
Lisa: "If you don't want to be treated like a child, then don't act like one." She crosses her arms, sighing. "I understand how strong your desire is to be helpful, but we're just trying to look out for you. The last thing we want is for you to get worse."
Markus: "Yeah, I get it..." He tucks the list in his pocket. "Alright, I do it. I'll... help you look for your books, Lisa..."
Lisa: "Good. Noelle, would you mind continuing to look after him for me?"
Noelle: "Understood." She says with a strong nod.
Markus: "Oh c'mon, you still don't trust me?"
Lisa: "No."
Markus: "Darn it..."
Lisa: "No need to be like that, sweetie. The both of you don't get many chances to talk, do you? You're a lot alike in many ways, so I think you'd make good friends. Think of this as a chance to get to know each other better."
Markus: "A lot alike...?" He glances at Noelle briefly, before drooping his head, shoulders sagging as he stares at the floor.
Lisa: "Oh, I just thought of a great idea! Noelle, do you have any casual clothes?"
Noelle: "Casual clothes?"
Lisa: "Yes, clothes that are much less formal than your uniform. Similar to the attire Markus is wearing."
Noelle: "Um, I think so? I believe a friend had gifted me some in the past, but I haven't had a chance to wear them. Why do you ask?"
Lisa: "Perfect. In that case, it'd be a good 'cover' for today. I don't want anyone to think the two of you are working today, or able to pile any requests on you both."
Noelle: "I understand why you're concerned about Markus, but why me? Are you worried I won't take my job watching over him seriously, Miss Lisa?"
Lisa: "Not at all. Rather, it'd be best to treat this like a leisurely outing."
Markus: "A... leisurely outing?"
Lisa: "That's right. In fact..." She smirks. "If you'd like, why don't you pretend you're going on a date with Noelle today?"
Markus: "A-a... what?!" He exclaims, instantly becoming flustered.
Lisa: She laughs at his reaction. "What, are you not interested in doing something like that with her?"
Markus: "O-o-of course not!"
Lisa: "Really? She's quite cute, though..." She feigns a gasp. "Goodness, is it because you'd rather go on a date with me instead? Oh my, I had no idea you saw me like that, how scandalous~! What would Jean think...?"
Markus: "That's it, I'm leaving."
Markus immediately turns around and starts walking away.
Lisa: "W-wait, sweetie! I was only teasing, come back!" She says while fighting off giggles. "And... he's already gone."
Noelle: "U-uh, I'd better follow him, then..." She says, blushing a bit from the earlier conversation.
Lisa: "Noelle... I'd suggest paying close attention to how Markus acts and goes about his day. It'll help you learn more about the type of person he really is... and I think you'll learn a lot about yourself in the process."
Noelle: "U-um... understood, Miss Lisa!" Even if she doesn't quite understand what Lisa means, she nods earnestly before hurrying after Markus.
--
Markus stands outside Noelle's quarters while she changes. While waiting for her, he realizes he could technically use this moment to finally slip away from her watchful eye... but he's far too good-natured to do something like that now.
Noelle: "S-sorry to keep you waiting..."
As Noelle slowly steps out, Markus turns toward her... and freezes. His eyes widen, and his face instantly turns red.
Noelle: "I-I'm not used to wearing clothes like this..." She stammers, nervously playing with her hair. "Sorry if I look strange..."
Markus says nothing, wincing and shaking his head as he looks away.
Noelle: "I knew it, I do look strange, don't I...?"
Markus: "N-no, that's not...!" He stops, fumbling for words before clearing his throat. "Never mind... let's go."
Noelle: "O-okay..."
Markus takes out the list Lisa gave him, scanning it for a moment.
Markus: "Hm... probably best to start with whoever's closest. Which would be... Cyrus from the Adventurers' Guild?"
Noelle: "Mister Cyrus?! I took him to be a responsible enough individual to not forget to return something he borrowed..."
Markus: "I... don't agree with that. But I certainly didn't take him for someone willing to test Lisa's wrath..."
Noelle blinks, but decides not to press further. She stays quiet as the two of them head toward the Adventurers' Guild.
As Markus assumed, Cyrus is standing outside, arms folded as he surveys the area. His eyes widen as he notices the two approach him.
Cyrus: "Ah, if it isn't Markus and Noelle! And... out of uniform? What a strange sight..."
Noelle: "O-oh, well, the reason for that is..."
Cyrus: "No, no, there's no need to tell me. I already know what's going on here."
Markus: "... You do?"
Cyrus: "Of course, there's only one explanation for this! You two... have finally decided to abandon your dreams of becoming Knights of Favonius, to become members of the Adventurers' Guild instead, haven't you!?"
Noelle: "W-what?!" She blurts out, stunned by the unexpected declaration.
Markus: "Uh... no? Also, I'm already a Knight of Favonius..."
Cyrus: "I understand completely. When you're young, it can be difficult to find your true calling. But I always knew you'd both make fine members of the Guild, so seeing you realize it at last fills me with joy!" He laughs heartily, arms akimbo.
Markus: "Aaand he's not listening to me..." He sighs, shrugging. "Figures..."
Cyrus: "Y'know, my son has always said he wanted you to become a fellow Guild member, Markus. This news will make him very happy!"
Markus: "Did Bennett really say that?" He inquires, raising an eyebrow.
Cyrus: "Well... I'm sure he would have, if I'd thought to ask him!"
Markus: "Riiight..."
Cyrus: "Tell me, do you both have a copy of the Teyvat Travel Guide? It's essential for any adventurer, you know."
He pulls one out to show them, which Markus immediately snatches out of his hand.
Markus: "Is that so? Then surely you of all people should own one yourself?"
Cyrus: "B-but that one belongs to..."
Markus: "... the Favonius Library. Which is long overdue, by the way. Lisa sent me to get it back."
Cyrus: "A-ah!" His face pales, panicking. "T-that's right! I lost my copy, so I decided to borrow one until I could get another to replace it... It's been so long, that I'd completely forgotten! Please, tell her to go easy on me, I beg of you!"
Noelle: "O-oh dear... There's no need to be so frightened. I'm sure Miss Lisa would understand if you..."
Markus: "I'm guessing you've never seen her when she's angry, huh?" He cuts in, shaking his head before turning to Cyrus. "Sorry, but I'm not bailing you out. It was your fault for forgetting, so return what you borrowed and deal with the 'aftermath' yourself."
Cyrus: "B-but..."
Markus: "But nothing. You don't want to be a bad role model for Bennett, right? Do you want him to think you're the kind of person that doesn't..."
Markus suddenly erupts in a loud barrage of coughs. Noelle quickly rushes to steady him.
Noelle: "M-Markus!"
Markus: "T-thanks, Noelle. I'm... okay." He exhales, calming down.
Cyrus: "Are you sure? What in the world happened?!" He asks, clearly alarmed.
Noelle: "Actually, Markus isn't feeling well. That's why he's doing this task for Miss Lisa instead of his usual work; he still wants to keep busy, but he needed something that wouldn't push him too much."
Cyrus: "Ah... I see..."
Noelle: "Yes, and I'm accompanying him to make sure he's okay. The casual clothes were her idea too, so everyone assumes we're off duty and won't try to rope Markus into more work while he recovers."
Markus: "..." He glances away bitterly.
Cyrus: "Does that mean you... are not here to join the Adventurers' Guild?!"
Markus: "No."
Cyrus: "Are you certai-..."
Markus: "Yes."
Cyrus: "Oh, how unfortunate... Then, what about you, Noelle? You've helped out the Guild so much, you're practically an honorary member already."
Noelle: "H-huh?! Um..."
Markus: "Hey, I've heard there are a couple people who take advantage of Noelle to do basically all their work for them. Please tell me you haven't been manipulating her into doing too much work for you as well, Cyrus?"
Cyrus: "'Manipulating'? Goodness, no! There's no need to say it like that!"
Markus: "Don't say you're just asking her for 'small favors', I've heard enough of that from people who come to visit Barb at the cathedral... 'Oh, Markus, no need to get so fussy, it's perfectly fine for me to waste her time healing my little scrape, she likes healing others!'"
Noelle: "Markus, calm down. There's no need for you to get so upset..."
Cyrus: "Yes, that's right! We only ask her for assistance when she's free, honest!"
Markus: "When she's 'free', huh? As far as I know, she's always busy with something. You know that she's the type to help anyone in need, even when she has other things to do, right?"
Cyrus: His gasps in realization. "O-oh no... I hadn't considered that...!"
Markus: He sighs again. "Noelle, don't let others take advantage of your kindness too much, okay? Or at least tell them to return the favor every once in a while."
Noelle: "It's alright, it's not too much trouble, really..." She assures him with a faint smile. "Besides, I heard you've also helped out the Guild plenty during your Outrider duties."
Cyrus: "Well, mostly Bennett and Fischl. But yes, you've helped them a great deal, indeed! I feel a lot less nervous about sending them out with you looking after them."
Markus: "Jeez, that's embarrassing, now I just sound like a hypocrite... Though, I'm not sure if that's really the same thing..."
Cyrus: "Hm..." He folds his arms, his expression turning thoughtful. "Markus, could you have become ill due to overworking yourself?"
Markus: "U-uh, yeah. Although I'm ashamed to admit it..."
Cyrus: "I believe I'm beginning to understand Lisa's intentions for assigning you and Noelle this more 'leisurely' mission." He hangs his head in shame. "It should've been clear sooner that I and many of us in the city have been relying on the two of you far too much. For that, I truly apologize."
Markus: "Um, no, I was telling you not to pile work onto Noelle, not me..."
Noelle: "Huh? But, Markus...!"
Cyrus: "To make up for this blunder, I will return this overdue Travel Guide to Lisa without a fuss!" He declares as he accepts the Travel Guide back from Markus.
Markus: "I mean, you should do that regardless, but... whatever."
As they watch Cyrus hurry along to the library, Markus lets out a deep groan, placing a hand on his forehead.
Markus: "P-phew..."
Noelle: "A-are you... feeling okay?"
Markus: "Yeah, I'm fine. Let's move on to the next person..." He takes a look at the list, and groans again.
Noelle: "What's the matter?"
Markus: "The next closest person is... Nimrod."
Noelle: "Nimrod...? If I recall, he's..."
Markus: "The local drunkard. Off to Angel's Share... Bleh..." He feigns a gag, not looking forward to entering the tavern reeking of alcohol.
--
As Markus and Noelle step into Angel's Share, the former immediately gags again, in a much "less feign way" than before.
Markus: "Ugh, if only I had a stuffy nose... Then maybe I'd feel thankful for being sick..."
Noelle: "Do you find the smell that unpleasant, Markus?"
Markus: "What, you don't?"
Noelle: "Hm, well... I suppose I've frequented this establishment enough that I've grown used to its scent. I hardly notice it anymore."
Markus: "Used to it? You're not a drinker, are you?" He raises an eyebrow in confusion. "No, we're the same age, that doesn't make any sense..."
"Noelle! It's nice to see you here again. Oh, and fancy seeing you here too, Markus!" The bartender of the tavern greets them cheerfully.
Noelle: "Greetings, Charles." She greets back politely. "Is Nimrod here today?"
Charles: "Ah, so you're here looking for Nimrod... That explains it. Is his wife looking for him again?"
Markus: "No, it's for something else. But why are you treating Noelle like she's a regular here?"
Noelle: "Oh, I often stop by to see if Charles needs help with waiting on customers."
Markus: "Really, you're taking advantage of her kindness too, Charles?" He sighs, shaking his head.
Charles: "Eh, heh... It's just hard to say no when she's so eager to help... To be honest, I have been feeling kind of guilty about it..." He scratches the back of his head nervously. "But, it's nice to see you looking out for her, Markus. I didn't know you two were friends! Is that why you're together today?"
Noelle: "Um, no... I'm actually the one looking after him today. He hasn't been feeling well, so..."
Markus: "Tch, you didn't need to say that..." He cuts in sourly.
Noelle: "O-oh, my apologies!" She responds, a bit startled by his shift in tone. "Did you not want me to tell him you're ill? I'm sorry for being rude..."
Markus: "No, that's not..." He bites his lip, glancing away. "Never mind. Forget it..."
Noelle: "O-okay..."
Charles: "You're not feeling good, Markus? I can offer you something to drink if you'd like. Non-alcoholic, of course."
Markus: "No, I'm fine. Thank you anyway." He sighs again. "Where's Nimrod?"
Charles: "I haven't even told you if he's here yet."
Markus: "Oh, sorry, is he at The Cat's Tail instead? My mistake."
Charles: He laughs at Markus's sassy remark. "He's sitting in the corner over there."
Markus: "Thanks, Charles."
Markus makes his way over to where Nimrod is sitting, Noelle following closely behind. They eye him slumped over his table, four empty cups beside to him.
Nimrod: "M-more please...!" He mutters, before letting out a heavy belch.
Markus simply winces, pinching his nose as he turns his head away.
Noelle: "Nimrod! Didn't your wife already tell you to stop drinking so much?!" She exclaims in worry.
Nimrod: "H-hm?" He looks up at the two of them, and grins. "O-oh, Noelle and Markus! Good to see you here at Dawn Winery! Those clothes... are you both celebrating a long, successful day of work this fine evening?"
Markus: "This is Angel's Share, Nimrod. And it's still the middle of the afternoon."
Nimrod: "O-oh, really?" He hiccups. "Gosh, time flies so fast, that it's starting to go backwards..."
Markus: "That... doesn't make any sense. Just how drunk are you...?"
He's suddenly interrupted by a few small coughs.
Noelle: "M-Markus? Are you alright?"
Markus: "I-I'm fine. The odor of this place... is just making me gag a bit."
Noelle: "Do you need to step out and get some fresh air? I can take care of the matter with Nimrod for you..."
Markus: "N-no, like I said, I'm fine."
Noticing Markus's rising irritability, Noelle doesn't press things further and falls silent.
Nimrod: "Markus, buddy, I think you need a drink to perk you up! I'll get you something, on me!"
Markus: "U-uh... no thanks...? I..."
Nimrod: "Ah, right. You're still too young for that. My mistake!" He hiccups again, throwing an arm around him and dragging him onto the bench next to him. "In that case, take a seat next to me and relax! I'll share with you a bunch of fun stories I've heard from other folks I've shared a drink with."
Markus stiffens as Nimrod's alcoholic breath washes over him. He winces even more, turning his head away as best he can.
Noelle: "N-Nimrod, please let go of him! You're making him uncomfortable!"
Nimrod: "Nonsense, it's all good! Isn't that right, Markus?"
Nimrod pats him on the back obliviously, not listening to Noelle. Markus coughs again, his irritation flaring.
Noelle: "I'm here to look after Markus... I can't just stand by!" She thinks to herself worriedly. "I feel bad about being assertive, but...!"
She slams a fist on the table, a bit harder than she intended. This obviously makes Markus and Nimrod jolt in surprise.
Noelle: "L-let... go of him, Nimrod! This instant!"
Nimrod: "N-Noelle, no need to be like that! I was just...!"
He notices Noelle's uncharacteristically harsh glare, and slowly releases his arm off of Markus. Noelle immediately steps in, guiding Markus to his feet and toward the door.
Noelle: "I'm sorry if I frightened you. Why don't we leave for now? I'm sure Miss Lisa will understand."
Markus says nothing, his jaw clenched and his eyes dark with annoyance.
Noelle: "Don't worry, I'm here to help with whatever you need, okay? I..."
As she reaches to rest a hand on his back, Markus suddenly swats it away.
Noelle: "A-ah!" She recoils, clutching her hand, it stinging a bit from where Markus struck it. "M-Markus?! I apologize, did I...?"
Markus: "That's enough!"
His voice cracks like a whip, startling everyone in the tavern into quieting down, who all turn their attention to the two of them.
Markus: "Knock it off already! I'm not a child that needs to be coddled, Noelle!"
Noelle: "B-but I was only trying to...!"
Markus: "I don't care! Just... LEAVE ME ALONE!"
He storms out, slamming the door behind him. The tavern falls into a heavy, uneasy silence. Almost everyone's gaze still lingers on Noelle, who stands frozen by the door, her face pale, her hand still trembling where he struck it aside.
--
Near the fountain at Mondstadt's shopping district, Markus takes a seat on a bench, coughing and holding his head, his dizziness returning.
Markus: "A-augh!" He takes out the sheet, trying to ignore his returning fatigue. "N-next is..."
He glances upward, noticing Noelle hovering over him worriedly.
Markus: "You're still here...?" He mutters harshly.
Noelle: "..."
He notices how upset she looks, and he bites his lip, looking away from her. The silence between the two of them is interrupted by some nearby sniffles.
Beatrice is sitting on another bench nearby, crying as she holds a flower in her hand. Three other women stand next to her, trying to comfort her.
Noelle: "Oh no, Bea!"
She instinctively takes a step towards the group, before stopping herself and looking back at Markus.
Markus: "Uuugh..."
Markus lets out a heavy groan, before he gets up and makes his way toward the group as well.
Noelle: "E-Eury, what happened?"
Eury: "Oh, you're just in time! Could you please help us cheer up Beatrice?"
Markus: "Margaret, Marjorie, what're the two of you doing? Shouldn't you be working...?" He says flatly.
Margaret: "But... this is important!"
Marjorie: "Yeah, Bea... received a rejection flower from Quinn during Windblume!"
Beatrice: "Wah! I can't believe it! Why, Quinn?!" Her head droops into her legs, continuing to sob dramatically.
Markus notices the yellow flower in her hands, and sighs.
Markus: "... Oh. So that's what's going on..."
Noelle: "I apologize, but I'm rather confused... Isn't a flower a pleasant gift to receive from someone?"
Margaret: "No, not when it's a yellow one!"
Noelle: "H-huh? Are yellow flowers... bad? I'm sorry to say I'm not well-versed in flower meanings..."
Eury: "Markus, explain them to Noelle, please."
Markus: "Wha?! Why do I have to...?" He groans. "Ugh, fine, whatever. The color of the flower you gift someone is meant to show how you feel about them. At least during Windblume. Purple ones are just courtesy gifts, pink are for family, and yellow are for... friends."
He explains, sighing again.
Markus: "However, receiving a yellow flower from someone you have feelings for can be seen as 'I'd rather us stay friends'. Hence... them calling it a 'rejection flower'..."
Noelle: "O-oh dear..." She lifts a hand to her mouth, eyes widening.
Markus: "For romance, you're supposed to give someone a red one. That being said..." He shakes his head. "Quinn probably just gave it to her as a simple friendship gift. I'm assuming he still has no idea that Beatrice even sees him in 'that way', so..."
Marjorie: "No, it's a rejection flower!"
Eury: "For sure!"
Markus: "... Are you sure you all aren't just being overly dramatic because you find this situation entertaining?"
Margaret: "Of course not!" She pauses. "Okay, maybe a little..."
Markus: "Good grief..." He shrugs.
Noelle: "B-but... wow, I'm impressed! I didn't know you were so knowledgeable about flower meanings, Markus."
Markus: "It's just something I learned about from Kaeya... That I just so happened to remember..." He grumbles, looking away from her. "I-it's no big deal..."
Noelle: "O-oh, okay..." She mumbles, frowning while glancing away herself.
Margaret's gaze drifts over to Markus and Noelle, finally noticing their more casual attire before she gasps.
Margaret: "Wait, I can't believe I only noticed now! Markus... what are you doing wandering around while wearing clothes like that!? It's rare to see you out of uniform even on your days off, or when you come by to help Diona with something..."
Marjorie: "Noelle, you're wearing more casual clothes, too. You look so cute like this~!"
Noelle: "U-uh, heh... Why, thank you..." She blushes shyly.
Eury: "Not to mention, I don't believe I've ever seen the two of you 'hang out' much... How strange..."
Noelle: "W-well, you see..."
Suddenly, Eury's eyes widen, and she squeals in delight.
Eury: "Eeee~! Hold on, I know exactly what this is! You both... are on a date right now, right?!"
Markus: "W-what?! No!" He immediately responds, becoming flustered.
Eury: "I can't believe this is actually happening... right before my eyes! Do you have any idea how long I've shipped you two?!"
Noelle: "'Shipped'...?" She blinks, tilting her head in bewilderment.
Markus: "P-please ignore her, Noelle..."
Margaret: "Excuse me?! What do you mean, you've been shipping Markus and Noelle?" She places her hands on her hips in a huff.
Eury: "What, you got a problem with that?" She says back, crossing her arms.
Margaret: "Of course! Everyone knows the best match for Markus is Amber! Just imagine it... Their senior-junior Outrider bond, blossoming into love! So adorable and romantic~!"
Markus: "I-I don't see Amber like that!"
Eury: "Hmph! Markus and Amber have more of a 'sibling-like thing' going. But him and Noelle on the other hand... Two young, hard-working members of the Knights of Favonius... Same age, and same experience level, quietly supporting each other behind the scenes. On the surface, it may seem like they barely interact, but in truth... They're actually developing a hidden romance! So cute~!"
Markus: "U-um... Us not interacting much is true, though..."
Noelle: "E-erm... I'm not even a part of the Knights yet..." She looks away nervously, feeling a bit uneasy and awkward to be involved in their conversation.
Marjorie: "Both of you, knock it off! You're being ridiculous!"
Markus: "Finally, a voice of reason..." He exhales in relief.
Marjorie: "When it comes to Markus's best match... it's very clear that it's Albedo!"
Eury & Margaret: "H-huh?!"
Markus: "W-wha... Why are you bringing up Albedo now?!"
Marjorie: "Think about it. Albedo is normally the reserved recluse type, right? But haven't you noticed how cheerful he gets around Markus? His smile is at least half an inch wider when talking to him! Not to mention how often he invites Markus to take part in his alchemical work... Do you really think they're just... simply friends?!"
Markus: "Yes. Yes, we are." He states without hesitation.
Eury: "I-I didn't even think of that... Marjorie might be onto something..."
Margaret: "Yeah, she makes a really good point, actually..."
Markus: "Why are you agreeing with her?!"
"Hey, what are you all chatting about over here?" They hear someone chuckle from behind them, as she approaches the group. "I could hear you all the way from Good Hunter, y'know. Don't leave me out!"
Markus: "Sara... Please save me..." He mutters, almost pleading.
Margaret: "Sara, who do you think is best for Markus?"
Sara: "Hm? What do you mean?"
Eury: "Who's the cutest to pair with him?"
Sara: "Well, let's see... Markus does often bring Barbara over for lunch. They're probably the most adorable pair of siblings in all of Mond!"
Marjorie: "No, we mean romantically!"
Sara: "Ohhh... I see now. Markus, are you looking for a girlfriend?" She smirks, glancing over at him. "In that case, want to go on a date with me~?"
Markus: "H-huh?!" He becomes even more flustered, before shaking his head. "Quit it, Sara! Don't tease me!"
Sara: "Darn, I've been rejected. How disappointing~!"
Markus growls at her a bit, Sara responding by playfully sticking out her tongue at him.
Eury: "No way! A fourth, unexpected suitor has appeared! What a twist!"
Margaret: "Markus does stop by to eat at Good Hunter a lot in the middle of his patrols... Is it because of a hidden romance between the two of them?!" She exclaims, clearly enjoying the situation a bit too much.
Markus: "Ugh, enough! I've had it with..."
His words cut off as he erupts into a rough coughing fit. The chatter dies instantly, their teasing expressions shifting to genuine concern as they all step closer.
Noelle: "M-Markus!"
She tries to catch him again, only for Sara to beat her to it this time.
Margaret: "A-are you okay?! What happened?"
Sara: "Let's get you to a table by my restaurant. I'll prepare something for you to drink." She hold Markus by the shoulders, keeping his body steady.
Markus: "T-thank you, Sara..."
Noelle: "..."
They hover around him protectively, slowly guiding him toward Good Hunter.
Beatrice: "Uuuh... They forgot all about me..." She sniffles, still looking at the yellow flower in her hand, now all alone.
--
Markus gulps down two cups of water, then a glass of Wolfhook juice, before finally settling down.
Markus: "P-phew..."
Eury: "Wow, you must've been... really thirsty." She utters, although still concerned. "You don't even like Wolfhook juice, do you?"
Markus: "Nah, I can tolerate it, unlike Amber..."
Sara: "Don't worry, those are on the house."
Markus: "Thanks, Sara..." He lets out a deep, tired exhale. "I... appreciate it."
Sara: "Also, sorry for not offering you any Sunsettia juice. I'm all out today, unfortunately."
Markus: He chuckles a bit, with a faint smile. "No, it's fine... Thank you."
Margaret: "So... are you feeling better? What was that about earlier?"
Marjorie: "Are you not doing well, Markus?"
Noelle: "Well, he's not very..." She pauses, looking over at Markus briefly before stopping herself.
Markus frowns, letting out a reluctant sigh.
Markus: "I... got sick because I overworked myself. Lisa asked Noelle to watch over me while I helped her with an errand."
Sara: "Markus, if you're not feeling good, especially from fatigue, you should be in bed resting instead of doing more work."
Markus: "I-I know. I've troubled a couple people today because of my stubbornness, especially..." He looks over at Noelle briefly, before his eyes drift down to the empty glass in his hands.
Sara notices Markus and Noelle awkwardly look away from each other, and shakes her head.
Sara: "Markus, listen. I know you often get into quarrels with Barbara, but you can't treat Noelle the same way as your sister. She's a sweet girl y'know, if you were mean to her, you need to apologize!"
Markus: "N-no, it's not like that, I...!" He stops himself, sighing. "Y-yeah, okay..."
Margaret: "Wait, hang on a minute, have you been sick this whole time? I could've sworn I saw you leave earlier today through the back gate wi-..."
Eury: "Markus, please make up with Noelle!" She suddenly cuts Margaret off. "It'd be so sad if you broke up, you make such a cute couple!"
Markus: "Would you knock it off with that, Eury?! Jeez..." He groans. "By the way, before I forget, your husband has an overdue book he needs to return to the library, could you tell him once he's sobered up?"
Eury: "Oh? Ah right, that's my fault, I was the one who asked him to..." She stops herself, narrowing her eyes. "Wait, is Nimrod drinking in the middle of the day again?!"
Markus: "Yep, at Angel's Share. He was begging for a fifth cup when we arrived..."
Margaret: "Oh no... Eury already asked me to ban him from The Cat's Tail..."
Eury: "Yeah, and I'll have to ask Charles to do the same thing! Honestly!"
Markus: "Looks like he really will have to go to Dawn Winery for a drink next time..."
Marjorie: "Eury, did you really forget to return a book to Lisa? That's pretty brave of you..."
Markus: "She's just as 'brave' as your father... and you as well, Marjorie." He tells her, taking out his list. "You're the last person I had to look for, actually..."
Marjorie: "O-oh no!"
Eury and Margaret both snicker in response, while Marjorie panics.
Sara: "Does that mean you're done with Lisa's errand, then? What are you going to do now, Markus?"
Markus: "Go back home and rest... which I should've been doing this whole time..."
Markus slowly and shakily gets up from his seat, taking a deep breath as he turns back toward the cathedral.
Noelle: "M-Markus, wait! I...!"
Markus: "Could you tell Lisa I finished what she asked? And, thanks for..."
He pauses, glancing away.
Markus: "... Never mind."
He gives a small, almost apologetic nod before turning back around. His steps are awkward and uneven, but he doesn't look back.
Noelle watches him go, her hands clutched tightly in front of her. Her gaze drops to the ground, a faint frown on her lips.
--
A while later, Markus is up on the roof of the cathedral, absentmindedly looking down at the people strolling through the courtyard as he lets out a deep sigh.
Markus: "Sister Victoria scolded me for sooo long after I got back. Well, I suppose I did deserve it..." He lays back, staring at the sky above as he sighs again. "She'll probably scold me again if she finds out I'm up here instead of in bed, but... there's too much on my mind for me to be able to sleep right now."
Markus thinks about his time with Noelle throughout the day, wincing at how he acted toward her at Angel's Share.
Markus: "U-ugh, I-I'm so awful... Noelle, I..."
Noelle: "Markus?"
He jumps up in shock, seeing her standing in front of him suddenly.
Noelle: "I'm sorry for startling you. I asked Sister Victoria where you were, and she told me she saw you come up here..."
Markus: "Drat, she already knows I'm here, huh...?"
Noelle: "I don't mean to bother you. I just... wanted to talk. If that's alright..."
Markus: "Yeah, of course you want to talk. Fair enough, after how I acted toward you in the tavern... No, how I've been acting all day, really..."
He slowly stands up, facing her. To his surprise, tears begin to well up in her eyes, her head drooping downward.
Noelle: "I'm so sorry!" She cries. "I was given the simple task of watching over you while you were sick, and I couldn't even do that right! I'm a failure as a maid of the Knights of Favonius... No, as a fellow Knight... N-no, wait, I'm not even a proper Knight of..."
Markus: "N-Noelle! Stop, stop! Calm down!" He cuts her off before she rambles on any more. "Seriously, how could you possibly think you're to blame for what happened?! Honestly, you're earnest to a fault..."
Noelle: "B-but... you became so cross with me... I thought it was..."
Markus: "I'm the one who should be apologizing, not you..."
Noelle: "H-huh?" She looks up at him, still teary-eyed.
Markus: "Noelle, we've run into each other plenty of times in the Knights of Favonius Headquarters, and occasionally out in the city as well, but we've barely ever spoken, right?"
Noelle: "Yes, that's true. Miss Lisa's told me I should try a bit harder to talk with you, but I've been mostly unsuccessful..."
Markus: "Really...? That just makes me feel even worse now..." He laughs painfully. "Come to think of it, that's probably why she had you look after me today..."
Noelle: "You don't need to feel bad about that. You're always busy after all, it's understandable if..."
Markus: "I've been avoiding you on purpose."
Noelle: "W-what?!" The unexpected statement makes her eyes widen. "I-I see... Is it because... you don't think I'm worthy of your time?"
Markus: "Don't be stupid, that's not why!" He shakes his head profusely. "I've... heard a lot about how reliable and amazing you are. How you're able to help anyone without fail. Some even say you're more reliable than the members of the Adventurers' Guild, or even some of the Knights! And... I've seen how capable you are myself, so I know they're not just rumors..."
Noelle: "G-goodness... surely you jest..." She blushes faintly, looking away slightly.
Markus: "Of course I don't 'jest'." He states, his serious tone not waning. "This is an incredibly pathetic thing to admit, but knowing there's someone so much more capable than me, that's the same age as me... Has made me feel so inadequate."
Noelle: "Markus, what are you saying?!" She says in disbelief.
Markus: "I'm saying that's the reason I've been avoiding you... because I'm an insecure moron!"
He suddenly slams his hands on the railing in front of him, startling Noelle.
Markus: "I felt ashamed enough being looked after, but I felt even more shameful that it was you of all people looking after me. And even while you were earnestly taking the time out of your day to make sure I was alright, I couldn't bring myself to admit why! And instead, I kept my feelings bottled up, and ended up blowing up at you... for a stupid reason like that!"
Noelle: "..."
Markus: "I've been trying so hard to make some sort of meaningful difference with my work as a Knight, even if just a little. But it's no wonder that I'm so incapable when I'm thinking about dumb things like this, and getting sick from work fatigue... making everyone waste their time looking after me!"
Markus is now the one to break down, sobbing openly.
Markus: "Noelle, I-I'm... so sorry..."
Noelle watches him in silence, her chest tightening at the sight. For a moment, she doesn't know what to say... but then, her eyes widen slightly, gasping in realization.
Noelle: "So this is what Miss Lisa meant, by what she told me before I left the library..."
She steps closer, laying a trembling but steady hand on his shoulder.
Noelle: "Hearing that you feel that way about yourself... It breaks my heart, Markus. Especially considering what my impression of you was before now. But, it's made me realize how blind I might've been to how others see me..."
Markus: "W-what? What are you talking about?"
Noelle: "N-no, it's not that I've been blind. I've chosen to ignore their words, just taking them as their way of showing me kindness. I've been told often that I'm too hard on myself, but I've always thought of that as a good thing, so I could always strive to be better. After all, I've still yet to become a proper Knight, so surely I still have much to improve on."
Markus slowly but hesitantly glances back at her, Noelle smiling at him through her own tears.
Noelle: "But... maybe me being so hard on myself was the problem all along. And it took seeing someone that's just like me to finally notice."
Markus: His eyes soften for a moment, before he clenches his jaw and looks away again. "N-no...! That's not true; we're not the same at all...!"
Noelle: "We are!" She blurts in a more assertive voice than before. "And that's why I won't allow you to sink even further into self-doubt!"
Markus: "N-Noelle..."
Noelle: "You're a very caring, noble soul, who always puts the needs of others before himself. I've heard so many wonderful things about you, certainly more than I've ever heard about me. And I've never believed any of them to be exaggerations."
Markus: "... H-how would you know?" He mutters, stepping back while still avoiding her gaze.
Noelle: "Because I've seen for myself what you're truly like. You wanted to work so badly, even while ill. And you didn't go out of your way to tell anyone, because you didn't want them to worry."
Markus: "S-so? If anything, I was being selfish..."
Noelle: "You're not selfish! Normally, everyone accepts my help without a second thought, but when we were talking to Mister Cyrus and Charles, you were concerned for my sake, and told them not to overwork me. You said you felt insecure about being looked after, but you were still looking out for me, probably without even realizing it!"
Markus: "I-is me being concerned for your sake really that strange...? I-it's... perfectly normal to act that way..."
Noelle: "And you're very well loved, Markus! When we were talking with Eury and the others before, it became very clear to me just how much the citizens of Mond care for you."
Markus: "W-what, because of their teasing...? If that's true, they sure have a weird way of showing it... And I could say the same for you, y'know..."
Noelle: Despite all his deflections, she remains firm. "You put up a rough front, but it's clear you truly care about everyone's well-being. You're so selfless, but... you're so hesitant to let anyone care for you the same way. Just like me..."
Markus: He shakes his head quickly, almost too quickly. "N-no, you're wrong! I'm... really not that selfless, especially compared to you. It's true that I get praised often, but I'm sure it's just their way of being nice. It's doesn't mean anyth-..."
He's suddenly interrupted by some muffled giggles coming from Noelle.
Markus: "H-hey, what's so..." His eyes shoot up in realization, before finally returning his gaze to Noelle. "... Oh. U-uh, I..."
Noelle: "See? It's just as I said, isn't it?"
Markus: "Okay, maybe we're a little similar..." He pouts, his cheeks turning slightly pink.
Noelle: "Yes, because you're much more impressive than I am."
Markus: "Feh, nuh uh. Absolutely not."
Noelle: "But it's true! There's so many people that look up to you!"
Markus: "To me? No way." He shrugs, trying to resist letting out even a faint smile. "It's probably only Klee and Bennett that do, since they're young and think too highly of me... maybe Razor also? Pretty sure that's it..."
Noelle: "I look up to you as well!"
Markus: "H-huh?! You're kidding, right?" He exclaims, taken aback by her declaration. "If anything, I should be the one looking up to you!"
Noelle: "G-goodness, me? I'm but a humble maid of the Knights of Favonius, while you're... a proud example of a true Knight!"
Markus: "You're exaggerating! I'm surely the least impressive Knight, while you're probably more capable than half of them, and you're not even officially one yet!"
Noelle: "No, you're the one exaggerating!"
Markus: "I'm not!"
Noelle: "You are!"
Markus & Noelle: "Stop being so hard on yourself!"
They both go silent as they realize they both just shouted in unison, before they burst into laughter.
Markus: "O-okay, okay, this will go on forever at this rate, so... fine. You win. I'll try to recognize my own good traits... a little more. At least for your sake."
Noelle: "And I'll try to do the same for myself as well... for your sake."
Markus: He exhales deeply, clutching the railing as he looks down at the courtyard again. "I'll still try my best to improve as much as I can, though. I... want to be as impressive of an Outrider as Amber, at least."
Noelle: "As Amber? Do you look up to her, Markus?"
Markus: "Of course I do. She's... basically my hero." His face lights up as he gives a small, awkward smile. "I used to be in a much darker place in the past. Amber gave me the chance to take a different path, one where I could actually try to prove I have some worth in this world..."
Noelle: "It's wonderful that Amber was able to help you... but what do you mean by 'darker place'?"
Markus: "W-well... You know what family I belong to, right?"
Noelle: She gasps softly, then lowers her gaze with a small, regretful nod. "You're Master Jean's younger brother... Of course. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked."
Markus: "That's okay, it doesn't really bother me anymore..." He hesitates, then lets out a humorless chuckle. "Well... maybe it still does, actually. Considering what we just talked about, I guess it affects me more than I'd like to admit..."
Noelle: "Markus, if you ever need help with anything, I'll always be here to lend a hand. I promise!"
Markus: He blinks at her sincerity before smiling faintly. "T-thanks, Noelle. I'll... try to rely on you without making a big fuss or getting insecure again. But in exchange... you'll let me help you just as much!"
Noelle: "B-but I wouldn't want to trouble you..." She flinches, before shaking her head, smiling faintly as well. "No, I... Okay, it's a deal."
Markus: "Oh... and could you not tell Amber about me seeing her as 'my hero'? I haven't told anyone about that before, including her, because... well, it's kinda embarrassing..."
Noelle: "But why not? It's quite adorable that you view her in such a manner!"
Markus: "Seriously, Noelle? I didn't think you were the type to tease. I have enough friends who do that already..."
Noelle: "'F-friends'? Does that mean..." She blushes, turning away shyly. "You consider me to be your friend as well, Markus?"
Markus: "W-well, uh, yeah? I guess..." He scratches the back of his head, blushing slightly as well. "Is... that not okay?"
Noelle: "Of course it's okay! Um, assuming it's not selfish of me to see you that way..."
Markus: "You're right, it's extremely selfish of you, Noelle." He jokes. "Whatever was I thinking, suggesting such a thing?"
Noelle: "H-hey!" She places her hands on her hips, pouting. "It seems like you're the type who likes to tease too, Markus!"
Markus: "Heh, sorry, I couldn't resist." He smirks playfully.
Noelle: "... Oh, that's right! I almost forgot..." She takes out a thinly-wrapped, ornately decorated present. "U-um, this was supposed to be a gift for you, to apologize for before..."
Markus: "I already told you, you don't need to apologize for..."
Noelle: "I know. But I'd still like to give to you, if that's alright. Think of it as a... friendship present."
Markus: "Heheh... alright." He accepts it, looking curious. "But... what is it? This looks like the wrapping you'd use to gift someone a flower during Windblume."
Noelle: "Yes, because it is a flower. It's my favorite type of flower, actually. I hope you like it..."
Markus carefully unwraps the top, and once he sees what's inside... He steps back in shock, becoming flustered.
Noelle: "I-is something wrong?!"
Markus: "N-Noelle! This is...!"
Noelle: "A rose. Do you... not like roses?"
Markus: "That's... not it. It isn't just a rose... it's a red one..."
Noelle: "That's right. Eury told me a red one would be ideal, especially if I gave it to you as a belated Windblume gift..."
Markus: "Eury told you that?!" He groans, holding a hand to his forehead in disbelief. "Ohhh, that explains everything..."
Noelle: "I'm sorry, but I don't follow. Is... there a problem, Markus?"
Markus: He exhales deeply, trying to calm himself down before he explains, "In the 'language of flowers', do you know what red roses symbolize?"
Noelle: "Of course. They symbolize passion and hard work, so I thought it would suit you well, Markus."
Markus: "N-no, I mean during Windblume..."
Noelle: "Hm? Does it mean something else during Windblume?"
Markus: "Yes. Do you not remember what I mentioned about flower colors before?"
Noelle: "Yes. Pink ones are for family, yellow ones are for friends, and... hm. This is a red rose, so... What do red ones represent again?"
Markus: "M-murgh..." He whimpers in exasperation, clearly not looking forward to having to explain it to her. "N-Noelle..."
Noelle: "...?" She innocently tilts her head, still not getting it.
Markus: He pauses, his unease rising. "Red flowers are used to express... romantic feelings. Red roses especially..."
Noelle blinks a few times before panicking, darting behind the bell tower for cover.
Noelle: "E-eek! I-I had no idea, honest! I-I-I'm so sorry Markus, I didn't mean to... It's a misunderstanding...!"
Markus: "C-calm down, Noelle...!"
Markus steps closer to her, Noelle peeking out from behind the stone wall shamefully.
Markus: "I... get it. I know you wouldn't give me a gift like that intentionally..."
Noelle: "Of course, I would never have the audacity to. Surely I'm the last person you'd want to receive such a gift from..."
Markus: "Don't say that! I mean, in the end, I got a red flower for Windblume from a beautiful girl. That's still pretty flattering, even if it was because of a mistake..." He laughs nervously, smiling warmly. "So, it's fine! No need to worry about it, okay?"
Noelle: "B-beautiful...?" She covers her face with her hands, trembling slightly as her blush turns an even deeper red.
Markus eyes widen as he realizes what he just said, his own face flushing deeply as well.
Markus: "U-uh... The rose! Yes, it's quite beautiful isn't it?" He utters after coughing in an exaggerated manner. "What a wonderful gift to receive, as this flower is very beautiful!"
Noelle: "Y-yes, the flower! I agree, roses are very pretty, they're my absolute favorite!"
Markus: "Y-yes, I know! You already told me that!"
Noelle: "A-ah right, I did, didn't I?"
They both laugh nervously, until the tension between them is eased. Markus lets out another cough, a real one this time, Noelle leaving her cover to check on him.
Noelle: "A-are you okay?"
Markus: "Don't worry, I'm fine. But... I guess I should get some rest now. The last thing I should be doing is giving anyone even more reason to worry about me..."
Noelle: "Do you need help going down the stairs?"
Markus: "Nah. I managed to climb up them well enough at least, so I think I'll survive..."
Noelle: "Alright, take care then, Markus."
He heads for the stairs, but before he reaches them, he stops. His hand curls up, before he glances back at her, this time not looking away.
Markus: "... Thanks for everything today, Noelle."
